The 2022 Florida Derby is set to be staged on 2nd April 2022. It is an annual three-year-old contest that takes place at Gulfstream Park, in Florida, over 1m1f on a dirt surface. The next edition of this Grade One contest is scheduled for early April, five weeks before the Kentucky Derby for which it is used as a trial.

The 2021 Florida Derby was run on 27th March and won by Known Agenda, who rewarded favourite backers at odds of 5/1. It was first run in 1952 so is a US race that has plenty of history.

Florida Derby 2022 Favourites
The betting for 2020’s contest was headed by Tiz The Law who was the winner of the Grade One Champagne Stakes in 2019 at Belmont Park. Barclay Tagg’s runner made a winning return to action last month in the Grade Three Holy Bull Stakes.
Ete Indien was second behind Tiz The Law on his penultimate start at Gulfstream Park. He then produced the best performance of his career to blow the field away over the same C&D in the Grade Two Fountain of Youth Stakes.
One of the most impressive two-year-old performances in 2019 came from Independence Hall who prevailed by 12 and a half lengths in the Grade 3 Nashau Stakes at Aqueduct. Michael Trombetta’s colt finished second in the event at Tampa Bay Downs on his return to action in the 2020 campaign.
Other entries for the Florida Derby 2020 included Gouverneur Morris and Ajaaweed. The latter is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin who is set to quit training to become an agent in the near future.

In 2019, it was recent Saudi Cup winner Maximum Security who came out on top at Gulfstream Park. He prevailed by three and a half lengths which gave him 100 points towards on the Road To The Kentucky Derby. That was enough to see him qualify for the race.
The 2019 Florida Derby winner was involved in controversy in the Kentucky Derby last May. He finished the race first past the post but was later demoted to 17th place because the stewards deemed he had impeded other runners when he came off the rail.
To date, the most successful Florid Derby jockey is John R Velazquez with five wins, while trainer Todd Pletcher is the most-winning trainer – with six successes.
Florida Derby Prize Pool
The prize pool for the Florida Derby was cut from $1million to $750,000 due to the 2020 race run behind closed doors. Like many other tracks in the US, racing took place behind closed doors so measures were taken to reduce spending.
Despite the cut, the Gulfstream Park contest is still one of the most lucrative on the three-year-old calendar and a race all the connections of runners will be desperate to win.
