One thing we know for certain is that, fitness allowing, whoever wins the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs will be lining up as a favourite for this race with the Triple Crown very much in their sights.
Only thirteen horses have landed the Triple Crown in history, two of them in recent years for Bob Baffert in the shape of American Pharoah and Justify but it’s Godolphin and Brad Cox who have an early favourite in the shape of Essential Quality.
The beautiful grey son of Tapit landed the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in great style at Keeneland, and there is nothing in his breeding or form to suggest he shouldn’t remain favourite for the Triple Crown races unless there are some top-quality newcomers early in 2022.
Given Swiss Skydiver’s brave win against Authentic in 2020 however, don’t discount the fillies in this race either.
Additionally, given that this is probably the most important race in the chase for the Triple Crown, we expect to see lots of Preakness betting tips left and right in the months to come.
There are already some potential favourites worth noting, so take a look at our table below for more info on them.
As has been the trend over the past few years, especially in the case of Bob Baffert’s yard in California, some of next season’s best US three-year-olds may not even make their debuts until the new year.
Given what they have achieved in 2020 however, these were the main contenders for the Preakness Stakes in May 2021. For more information about the runners and favourites, read our page dedicated to Preakness Stakes horses (find your favourite to win).
- Foaled: April 9th, 2018
- Sire: Tapit
- Dam: Delightful Quality
Tapit is a great sire, especially of Belmont Stakes horses so should Essential Quality win the Kentucky Derby and then this race, he’d be a very short price to land the Triple Crown in New York.
Having won easily on debut at Churchill Downs, Brad Cox’s colt then bolted up in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity Stakes at Keeneland before repeating the trick over the same course and distance in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, becoming America’s champion two-year-old in the process.
- Foaled: February 13th, 2018
- Sire: Maclean’s Music
- Dam: Unicorn Girl
After winning twice at the top level in 2020 at Saratoga and Belmont, Jackie’s Warrior arrived in Kentucky as favourite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in November.
As it turned out, Steve Asmussen’s colt was no match for Essential Quality but ran a solid race all the same in fourth place and remains one of the top contenders on the Triple Crown trail for 2021.
- Foaled: February 8th, 2018
- Sire: Laoban
- Dam: Inclination
Previously a 3¼-length second to Essential Quality in the Breeders’ Futurity, Keepmeinmind got a little closer at the Breeders’ Cup but was ultimately put in his place back in third, beaten two lengths.
Robertino Diodoro’s representative is clearly an improver and having dwelt at the start in the big one before running on late, it is more than possible he can get to the level required to win a race of the magnitude of the Preakness by May.
Sittin On Go
- Foaled: January 11th, 2018
- Sire: Brody’s Cause
- Dam: Set’n On Ready
While he was only 9th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Dale Romans’ horse did not show his true running and it would be unwise to rule him out of this race at such an early stage.
Previously, Sittin On Go had landed a Grade 3 race at Churchill Downs in very good style and is one that could yet get better. Watch this space in the Derby prep races from March onwards.

Preakness Stakes Betting Types
When it comes to Preakness Stakes tips, maybe the most important one is that anyone who is eager to place wagers on this race needs to know the basics about how to bet on horses and some elementary horse racing betting terms. To help you place your bet on the Preakness race, take a look at the useful info you can find below related to these topics.
Everyone who knows a thing or two about betting on horse racing events and horse racing betting terms has heard of tote betting. This term is used to describe the betting type which involves all the bets placed on a certain betting market going into a “pool.” There are no fixed odds in this betting type, as they are determined by the number of total bets placed and the amount that was wagered. This means that, for example, the fewer people place a bet on the same horse as you, the higher your potential returns can be.
Most popular types of bets
Before you start looking for more Preakness Stakes tips, you should get to know some other popular Preakness Stakes betting types. A win bet is the one that you will usually come across. By placing this bet, you are betting on a horse to win.
- If you have a favourite that you believe is going to win the race, but there’s also a chance that he can come second, you can consider wagering a place bet.
- An each-way bet in a way combines these two into one as it allows you to bet on a horse to win (the “win” part) and to finish in one of the following places: second, third, or fourth (even fifth and sixth with certain bookmakers)
In addition to these, there are lots of other horse racing betting types including show, quinella, exacta, trifecta, superfecta, etc.
How To Bet On the Preakness Stakes: Our Top Preakness Tips
As we have already covered various areas related to the most useful Preakness Stakes tips, we’ll go into a few more details related to some other aspects that are equally important. It’s a known fact that the horse and its form play the greatest part in accomplishing a fantastic result. However, the trainer and the jockey also play a significant part in this, too.
The Trainer Statistics
As a Triple Crown race for the three-year-old generation, it goes without saying that the Preakness line-up is intriguingly different every year.
That said, certain trainers know how to get the job done at Pimlico and so it pays to know who the best in the business are and how well they’ve done in the middle leg of the Triple Crown.
Of the current crop of trainers in the States, these have fared best in the Preakness (no. of wins first):
- 7 Bob Baffert
- 2 Steve Asmussen
- 1 Michael W. McCarthy
- 1 Mark Casse
- 1 Chad Brown
- 1 J. Keith Desormeaux
- 1 Kenneth McPeek
- 1 Doug O’Neill
- 1 Dale Romans
- 1 Barclay Tagg<
The Jockey Statistics
It has been said that the jockey’s role is limited but nothing could be further from the truth. In a race as big as the Preakness, keeping a horse calm on the way to post, breaking alertly, finding the right position, saving ground where possible, judging the pace currently and being strong in the finish are all crucial factors.
A horse could have been prepped expertly for the Preakness Stakes but could lose because of a bad ride, so keep in mind that this race has been won in recent years by the likes of Tyler Gaffalione, Javier Castellano and Robby Albarado and they may all return with good rides in 2022.
Preakness Stakes History and Facts
The Preakness Stakes is one of the oldest major races in America. On the thoroughbred circuit since 1873, the 2022 running of the race will be the 147th in history and over that time it has provided the middle leg win for 13 Triple Crown heroes.
The next edition is in the Preakness’ usual slot two weeks after the Kentucky Derby on the third Saturday in May. The purse, as usual, will be $1.5million.
While Pimlico Race Course in Maryland is the spiritual home of the Preakness, there was talk of moving the race in recent years.
The Preakness, as a Triple Crown event, is for three-year-olds only and is run over 1 mile, 1½ furlongs, a distance over which the great Secretariat holds the track record having run this race down in 1:53 back in 1973.
